Lost Friends
Lost Friends
Stuck in the memory of time,
The friends you knew but have lost are forever young.
You can’t imagine they had lives once they left your orbit
They are your prom date, your kindergarten best friend.
Your first wife who you wished you had treated better.
They don’t have dimming eyesight, arthritic hands.
They are frozen in the amber of the time you knew together.
They are strong and healthy, never to feel the pains of getting old.
When you look into your mind’s eye, that’s what you see.
Then you turn to look in the mirror and you see the grey.
You feel the aches, physical and emotional, of loves lost, mistakes made,
and you try not to be too hard on yourself.
For we all make mistakes, No matter how hard we try to be perfect.
If there is a God, you pray that it’s divinity will forgive you what you can’t forgive yourself
And welcome you into its loving embrace, and you wonder,
what happened to them? Did they live well?
Are they still there, somewhere, thinking the same about you?
